At Granja de Moreruela, north of Zamora, pilgrims on the Vía de la Plata choose: continue north to Astorga and the French Way, or turn west onto the Camino Sanabrés. The Sanabrés is the more direct line to Santiago and the one most southern pilgrims take.
It climbs through the Sanabria uplands and over the Portela da Canda into Galicia, then follows river valleys down to Ourense and its hot springs before the final run to Santiago. Distances between villages stay long and the terrain is consistently hilly, but the country is green, wooded and almost empty of other walkers.
