The Coastal Way leaves Porto along the seafront and follows the Atlantic north through Vila do Conde, Esposende and Viana do Castelo before crossing into Spain at A Guarda. It rejoins the Central route at Redondela, so the last four days are shared.
It has become almost as popular as the Central route, and for good reason: long stretches of wooden boardwalk over the dunes, better food, and sea breeze instead of inland heat. The trade-off is more exposure on windy days and slightly fewer pilgrim-specific albergues, with more of the accommodation being ordinary guesthouses.
