Pilgrims landing at Bayonne, or coming down the French Atlantic coast, took this low-level route through the Baztan valley to Pamplona instead of climbing to Roncesvalles. It crosses the border at Urdax and follows green Basque valleys and beech woods south to join the French Way in Pamplona.

Five stages of consistently pleasant walking, with no high pass and a good deal of shade. It is very quiet and albergues are few, so most nights are spent in small pensions; the compensation is the Baztan valley itself, which is among the most attractive country in the Basque Pyrenees.
