Pilgrims coming from Arles and southern France crossed the Pyrenees at Somport rather than Roncesvalles, and walked down through Jaca and Sangüesa to rejoin the main route at Puente la Reina. The bridge that gives that town its name was built for exactly this junction.
Six stages through high Aragón: the Romanesque cathedral at Jaca, the abandoned village of Ruesta, and the octagonal church of Santa María de Eunate shortly before the French Way. It is a quiet, handsome week, and a good way to add a Pyrenean crossing without the crowds of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
